This thread is for discussion of the recent post concerning TAB no longer supporting full-text feeds in NewsFire.

Damn Dave Wantanabe! That been said, I use NewsFire. I'll dump it for NNW if I recieve it as part of a promo, but otherwise I'll just have to head to the site. Dave Wantanabe makes great apps but also is a class A jerk. This isn't the first I've heard where he's been stubborn regarding interaction with his customers.

I can't do what they are doing because I'm not represented by their ad network. In addition to that, NewsFire could easily start blocking those as well. This isn't really a black/white issue of "I'm ticked because they're blocking my ads." To me it's an issue of a developer making a specific point to rob business owners of the way they support themselves...similar to if people pirated his software. He just doesn't see it that way.

Hey Josh. Long time reader, first time poster.
While I can appreciate your circumstance (I own and operate a website as well), I don't see this as a reasonable solution. For instance, when I visit TAB using Firefox, I have a very common ad blocking extension running (Ad Block Plus). As such, I don't see any of the ads on your homepage. Does that mean you should ban Firefox as well? Of course not. And the same rule should apply to NewsFire users. By blocking the full-text RSS feed, what are you really gaining? Is the cost savings significant or are you simply "sending a message"? Considering there are many Apple RSS feeds, I'm more likely to use those rather than switch RSS readers (especially when I paid for NewsFire and feeds are free). Don't drive away loyal readers simply because they can't (and often times, don't want to) see advertisements. Last edited by Huuuze; 08-01-2007 at 02:25 PM. Reason: Removed bit about TechCrunch. I'm a NewsFire user, but I'm cool with this change. I usually like to read articles inside their site anyway.
To answer Huuuze's question, I think the problem is that you chose to install AdBlock, and while it leads to the same end, it's different from NewsFire which turns off ads by default and doesn't let user's change it. |
