iPhone Turn-by-Turn Directions Via Subscription? No Thanks

Written on June 24, 2009 by Tom Reestman and 23 people have commented

Hey, AT&T is a carrier, OK? They live and breath subscription models. So I don’t blame them for bringing their Navigator GPS app to the iPhone in the same manner as they do their other GPS phones. Still, no thanks.
It’s not just the subscription model, but the maps aren’t even local to the iPhone. If [...]

iPhone 3G S: Enable Tethering

Written on June 22, 2009 by Bryan Schuetz and 31 people have commented

So you’ve got a brand new iPhone 3G S and you want to know if you can use the AT&T tethering workaround everyone’s been talking about? Yes, yes you can. It’s all remarkably easy. It’s almost like Apple wants us to use this workaround — at least that’s the story I’m telling myself.
The good folks [...]

AT&T iPhone 3G S Preorders Exceed Expectations

Written on June 19, 2009 by Charles Jade and 7 people have commented

Despite shorter lines in fewer countries than last year’s launch of the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3G S may yet perform nearly as well, at least during the first weekend of sales. Via AppleInsider, AT&T spokesperson Michael Coe has been quoted as saying AT&T “sold hundreds of thousands through our preorder process prior to the [...]

It’s Almost iPhone Day: How Are My Apple and AT&T Pre-Orders Going?

Written on June 18, 2009 by Tom Reestman and 21 people have commented

Earlier this week, I wrote about how I ended up ordering an iPhone 3G S via Apple and AT&T. The former had to be reserved at an Apple store (couldn’t get it delivered, I think, because I’m on a family plan, so they need in-person activation); the latter was to be delivered.
Keep in mind that [...]

AT&T Allows Even Earlier Subsidized Pricing for iPhone 3G Owners

Written on June 17, 2009 by Tom Reestman and 14 people have commented

I’m already on record saying that I think AT&T’s upgrade pricing for iPhone 3G owners is not only comparable to the industry, but maybe even a little better.
Despite what could already be considered reasonable terms, AT&T has responded to the complaints by shortening the contract duration for 3G owners to be eligible for the full [...]

How-To: Selling Your iPhone for Instant Gratification

Written on June 16, 2009 by Charles Jade and 23 people have commented

With the iPhone 3G S on sale in a matter of days, a rush of 3G and original iPhone owners will be selling their phones and upgrading to the new model. If you are planning on selling your current iPhone, there are a few simple steps that can help maximize your resale value.
Before beginning the [...]

On Subsidization: AT&T is Not Ripping Off iPhone 3G Owners

Written on June 12, 2009 by Tom Reestman and 57 people have commented

There is already a lot of noise over this all around the ‘net. Owners of the iPhone 3G saying they’re getting ripped off, or not being treated like “loyal customers,” because they’re not being offered the fully subsidized price for the new iPhone 3G S. In reality the AT&T upgrade pricing is pretty much like [...]

Dear AT&T: Maybe It’s Time to Get On the iPhone Bandwagon

Written on June 10, 2009 by Tom Reestman and 26 people have commented

I’ve defended AT&T on occasion regarding the iPhone, but its latest moves (or non-moves) make it hard to do so.
To recap its defense, I’ve praised AT&T for the following:

Without AT&T we don’t even have the iPhone as we know it. You think Verizon was gonna allow it? Heck, it’s been two years, and there’s still [...]

iPhone 3.0 Brings Tethering to 20+ Carriers…Except AT&T

Written on June 08, 2009 by Chris Ryan and 29 people have commented

As someone who has played with the betas of the iPhone 3.0 OS, I was excited to see the availability of tethering that would allow me to share the internet connection between my iPhone and my Mac. With 3.0 around the corner, the feature is coming, but not in the United States.

AT&T Announces Upgrades Just in Time for New iPhone

A news item yesterday on iLounge reports AT&T will be upgrading its existing 3G network to provide a “significantly faster” mobile Internet service. The communications giant is planning to double its current 3G network speeds and expand its cell coverage.
From AT&T’s own press release:
The upgrade to High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is part [...]

iPhone 3G Now Comes Directly from Apple to Your Door

Written on May 13, 2009 by Darrell Etherington and 5 people have commented

Apple seems to be trying everything they can think of to clear existing iPhone stock. As of today, you can finally order the iPhone 3G directly from Apple’s web site and have it delivered to your door.
If you’re fond of the old ways, you can still reserve your device at the Apple retail store and [...]

Entry-Level AT&T iPhone Plan Could Be Cut by $10 Next Month

Written on May 07, 2009 by Darrell Etherington and 21 people have commented

In a down economy, it could take more than just fancy new hardware to attract new converts to the Apple/AT&T cause. Sucker fanbois like me will be forking over whatever they ask us for to get our hands on the new device, but that doesn’t help telcos expand their subscriber numbers, or Apple grow their [...]

Apple iPhone vs. Palm Pre: AT&T Employee Talking Points Leaked

In case you want a preview of the mud-slinging that’s about to begin between AT&T and Sprint over the imminent iPhone/Pre smackdown, PreCentral.net has the goods. They’ve gotten their hands on an internal AT&T document circulated to employees detailing talking points that emphasize the advantages of the iPhone over Palm’s new yet-to-be-released wunderkind. I have [...]

AT&T Looking to Lock in iPhone Exclusivity Through 2011

Written on April 15, 2009 by Darrell Etherington and 3 people have commented

Does it actually surprise anyone that, according to a recent Wall Street Journal report, AT&T would be looking to extend their exclusivity contract with Apple to be the sole official U.S. iPhone carrier? If it does, I will begin to lose faith in the intelligence of our readers. The journal report claims that the exclusivity [...]

Apple Could Partner With Verizon, Rack Up Sales

Written on February 26, 2009 by Darrell Etherington and 9 people have commented

More rumors are making the rounds that Apple will soon be breaking up the sweetheart deal that has held until now with AT&T and do some seriously flagrant cheating with rival Verizon Wireless. Sources for the information are cited as “Apple deepthroats” by one outlet, which, while suitably mysterious sounding, doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in [...]

EFF Volleys to Make Jailbreaking Free of “Jail-Time”

Written on February 18, 2009 by Bob Rudis and 3 people have commented

As most savvy technology readers know, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act prohibits “circumventing” digital rights management (DRM) and “other technical protection measures” used to protect copyrighted works. While this ban was meant to deter copyright infringement, many corporations have misused the law to chill competition, free speech, and fair use. Every three years, the U.S. [...]

AT&T Begins Offering At-Home Activation for iPhones Bought Online

Written on December 11, 2008 by Darrell Etherington and 1 person has commented

In yet another move designed with the intention of moving as many iPhones as possible this holiday season, AT&T began taking orders online for the iPhone 3G today. The option is open to anyone, and includes both the 8GB and 16GB models. A minimum two-year contract purchase is required when ordering online.
Once you select your [...]

Official iPhone Tethering Rumored to Cost $30/month

Written on November 13, 2008 by Omar McFarlane and 4 people have commented

A MacBlogz source is claiming that the AT&T’s iPhone tethering their CEO Ralph De La Vega mentioned last week as coming “soon” will roughly add an additional $30 to your plan.
It is rumored to offer a 5GB/month allowance with the expected speeds of “GPRS: 30k – dialup speeds, EDGE: 110k – ISDN speeds, 3G: 1000k [...]

AT&T Adds 20,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots

Written on November 07, 2008 by Darrell Etherington and 5 people have commented

AT&T must be determined to get its subscribers online. First, we heard just yesterday that iPhone tethering is officially in the queue from CEO Ralph De La Vega. Now, there’s more good news for users of Apple’s little smartphone-that-could. Wireless hotspot provider Wayport, one of the largest in the U.S., has been acquired by AT&T.
Wayport, [...]
