Windows 7 Takes Pricing Cue From Snow Leopard

Written on September 18, 2009 by Darrell Etherington and 12 people have commented

Snow Leopard is selling like hotcakes. It’s selling  much better than Tiger, and a lot better than Leopard, too. If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say those strong sales numbers had something to do with price. Microsoft appears to think so, too.
For a limited time, Microsoft is offering students the opportunity to grab one [...]

Academic Appeal: Five Apps for the iPhone-toting Student

Written on August 13, 2009 by Mark Crump and 3 people have commented

With the academic year about to begin, and having already tackled the important issues of iWork vs. Office, it’s time to turn our attentions to the iPhone. With over 65,000 apps on the App Store, even subtracting all the iFart and iTip applications there are five I feel are indispensable for any college student’s life. [...]

Textbooks Now On iPhone, iPod Touch

Written on August 10, 2009 by Darrell Etherington and 15 people have commented

It appears that rumors of the death of the e-book on the iPhone platform were greatly exaggerated, at least that’s what Apple has said in a recent statement. Backing up Apple’s official denial of plans to discontinue that side of app store business is a Wall Street Journal report (subscription required) that details a new [...]

Academic Appeal: Comparing Pages and Word 2008

Written on August 05, 2009 by Mark Crump and 30 people have commented

This time of year, it seems almost inevitable. There’s a forum post somewhere, a plea for help in the middle of the night, asking a time-honored question. No, it’s not “the answer to Life, the Universe, Everything!” It’s more profound than that: “I’m starting school this fall and I want to know what to get, [...]

Apple Offers Summer ‘Camps’ for Kids

Written on May 22, 2009 by Nick Santilli and 5 people have commented

Whenever a friend who’s new to Apple picks up a new Mac of their own, I’m sure to tell them about the great educational and support services Cupertino offers as well. In-store group Workshops, Genius Bar and One to One are all great offerings. One I’ve not paid close attention until now is the opportunity [...]

OS Upgrading: More Customer Education Needed

Written on May 04, 2009 by Charles Moore and 6 people have commented

Apple arguably could do a better job of educating their non–tech oriented customers about the advisability and desirability of periodic software — especially OS version — upgrades.
That epiphany dawned on me during a telephone conversation last weekend with a friend I don’t see or talk to very often. This individual bought a G5 iMac several [...]

Apple Replaces 17″ Antique With 20″ for Education

Written on April 14, 2009 by Darrell Etherington and 2 people have commented

It wasn’t so long ago that the Internet was ablaze with news of the “new” 17-inch iMac for education priced at $899, which was actually a model they’d been offering, without updates, in that capacity for two full years at that point. Its “discovery” was in fact just people noticing something they’d never noticed before. [...]

The $899, 17-inch iMac for Education: Still Here, Always Has Been

Written on March 23, 2009 by Darrell Etherington and 3 people have commented

News “broke” over the weekend via a leak from Apple itself that the company still offers the low-end iMac model with a smaller, 17-inch screen, though it is available exclusively for education customers. The news came via the Apple eNews for Education newsletter for March, although clicking the “Buy” link from the iMac page does [...]

Apple U: Education or Indoctrination?

Wednesday saw an interesting development in the academic world when Yale’s Dean of the School of Management announced he was departing for greener orchards. Specifically, Joel Podolny will be helping start Apple University, with a target time frame of early 2009.
Don’t get your application package together just yet, as the nature of what exactly is [...]

Today Apple quietly launched iTunesU-K12, a resource for K-12 schools and districts throughout the United States. So far, only a few states have contributed (Arizona, Florida, Maine, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Utah) with varying amounts of content available.
iTunesU-K12 was announced at NECC (National Educational Computing Conference) at the “Apple’s Big Splash” event.

Chimoosoft created this fantastic little donationware app called TubeTv. With this app, you can save video files from YouTube and other sites and make them playable on your Mac, iPod, or Apple TV. There are of course other ways to do the same thing, but a standalone app that grabs your URL from your default [...]
